Local Economy and Job Market
When the city was incorporated in 1901, the community was blanketed with orange and grapefruit trees, quickly becoming the third largest orange producer internationally. The city's seal even bears an image of an orange with blooming orange blossoms. The days of orange and grapefruit groves are long gone and now, according to the City's 2009 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, Covina's top three city-wide employers (based on the number of employees on the company's payroll) are the Covina Valley Unified School District, Citrus Valley Medical Center, and Charter Oak Unified School District.
Parks and Recreation
The city of Covina's Parks and Recreation Department is committed to running and maintaining nine parks in addition to providing a variety of fun classes and programs designed to keep residents active and healthy every day. Classes range from fitness, educational and special interest. The city's park systems include sports fields, swimming pools, basketball courts, a community center, playgrounds, nature trails, and designated picnic areas.
Local Schools and Colleges
Three school districts provide high quality education to the students of Covina: Azusa Unified School District, Charter Oak Unified School District, and Covina Valley Unified School District. Each district pledges to enhance each student's learning capabilities by providing small class sizes, challenging curricula, and afterschool programs so that each student will be able to provide to their community as responsible citizens. Once students have graduated from high school and are ready to make the leap to a more collegiate setting, Mt. San Antonio College, Citrus Community College, and Cal Poly Pomona are ready to fulfill their higher learning ambitions.
