Located about 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley is the small city that's big on growth—Covina, California. Home to just under 50,000 residents, Covina is said to be "One Mile Square and All There," making it the smallest city by area in the United States. Not to be confused with West Covina, Covina itself is situated between the San Gabriel Mountains and the San Jose Hills. Some of Covina's neighboring communities include West Covina to the southwest; Baldwin Park, Vincent and Irwindale to the west; Citrus, Azusa and Glendora to the north; Charter Oak and San Dimas to the northeast; and Pomona to the southeast.
Founded by Joseph Swift Phillips in 1882, who later hired an engineer named Frederick Eaton to survey the land, it was Eaton who came up with the name Covina, a portmanteau of the words "cove" and "vine" for the natural cove-like setting formed by the San Gabriel Mountains and the vineyards planted by the area's earlier residents. The vineyards gave way to orange groves which, in the mid 1950s, gave way to a growing community of affordable homes. The natural contour of the land rises to gentle hills in the east that afford views of the countryside as well as the skyline of downtown Los Angeles. Covina boasts its own police department, library, senior's center, historical museum, parks, farmers market, old town downtown, little theater, and Christmas parade. With easy freeway access to the 10 and 210 freeways, and the Metrolink commuter rail, Covina is an effortless commute to work and fun.
